If you are a student and wondering if you can get car finance, this post is for you. Read on to find out everything you need to know about car finance for students…

We know that getting around is important, but cars can be expensive and so, finance can be a really good option for those looking for a more accessible way to get a car.

You can apply for finance if you are over the age of 18, if you are under the age of 18 you will not be allowed to get finance just yet.

If you are over 18 and wondering if you can get finance as a student, there are finance companies out there that may be able to help. Lenders will want to see that you can afford the monthly repayments, and so as long as you have the means to do so, there is a good chance that you will be able to get finance as a student.

We know that students come in many forms, from the ones fresh at university to those who have come back to education in later life and everyone in between. That is why our finance team will work with you to get to know you and to find out how we can support you moving forwards, with your finance application and your new used car as well.

We work with a variety of lenders to increase your chances of being approved for car finance and we will work with you to look at all the different options and what they could mean for you.

Finance isn’t a quick decision and you should carefully consider whether or not it is right for you. If you want to find out more and to chat to an expert, get in touch with us here at LMC and we will guide you through from start to finish.

Frequently asked questions

Can a student get car finance?

Yes, provided you are over 18 and can demonstrate you can afford the repayments. Being a student is not itself a barrier — lenders are looking at affordability and credit history rather than job title.

Part-time income, a deposit, or a part-exchange all strengthen an application. A shorter term with a slightly higher monthly payment can sometimes be easier to place than a long one.

Do I need a guarantor for student car finance?

Not always. Some lenders offer guarantor agreements where a second person takes responsibility if payments are missed, but many student applications are approved without one.

It is worth being clear about what a guarantor is agreeing to. It is a real financial commitment for them, not a formality.

What should a student budget for beyond the monthly payment?

Insurance is usually the largest additional cost for a younger driver, and it varies enormously between cars — check quotes on the specific vehicle before committing. Beyond that, budget for vehicle excise duty, fuel or charging, servicing, tyres and the annual MOT once the car is three years old.

A car in a low insurance group with a small petrol engine will normally cost far less to run overall than a slightly cheaper car in a higher group.
